Take Control of Your Allergies and Asthma

May is Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month and the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) would like to remind everyone that with proper diagnosis, prevention and treatment, there are no limits to what people with allergies and asthma can do.

Managing Allergies
Allergies are an overreaction of the immune system to substances known as allergens. Allergies are not only bothersome, but many have been linked to a variety of common and serious chronic respiratory illnesses (such as sinusitis and asthma). Additionally, allergic reactions can be severe and even fatal. However, with proper management and patient education, allergic diseases can be controlled and people with allergies can lead normal and productive lives.

The AAFA has developed the Allergy Action Plan Self-Screening Tool for Seasonal Allergies to help people recognize allergy symptoms, provide helpful tips on preventing allergies and information on over-the-counter and prescription treatment options. This easy to use tool can be found at www.allergyactionplan.com/tool.html.

Get A.H.E.A.D of Asthma
A national survey conducted by the AAFA revealed that there can be miscommunication, or lack of communication, between patients who suffer from asthma and their physicians. This new initiative provides patients with the right information to share with their physician.

A ─ Asthma is a disease that is different for each patient.
H ─ Having an understanding of what asthma control means for you is important.
E ─ Engaging your physician in discussion is key to your asthma management.
A ─ Answering physician questions provides understanding that asthma is under control
D ─ Discussing options with your physician can lead to better asthma control.

Staffed by registered nurses who specialize in respiratory disease, Healthfirst’s Asthma Care Management Program works with members, their PCPs, family members and other providers such as home health nurses and respiratory therapists to assess, educate, manage and monitor their condition. Members are also provided with up-to-date asthma educational materials and resources to better manage their asthma. In addition, Healthfirst promotes the age-appropriate use of peak flow meters and spacers, and appropriate referrals to specialists such as pulmonologists and allergists within the Healthfirst provider network.
